More than fifty years ago, the wave of pioneering prints in the form of pink monkeys dancing, green elephants swimming in pools or flowers blooming in the rainbow of colors hit the American fashion scene. And to think, it all started with the juice stand in Palm Beach when young Lilly needed the hobby! As the story goes, Lillian McKim, the young, sassy New York socialite had eloped with Peter Pulitzer, grandson of the Pulitzer Prize’s Joseph Pulitzer, or settled in Palm Beach to live the life of the rich or famous. Peter owned several Florida citrus groves, but Lilly needed the project of her own. So in the late 1950’s, with Peter’s produce, she opened the juice stand on Via Mizner, just off Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.Lilly Pulitzer - The Domain’s business was the hit, but squeezing oranges, lemons, limes, or pink grapefruit made the mess of her clothes. Realizing that she needed the juice stand uniform, Lilly asked her dressmaker to design the dress that would camouflage the stains.
